Capital of Devon, Exeter city is famous for many reasons. It was the seafaring home of Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Francis Drake, the magician Tommy Cooper, JK Rowling and John Babbacombe Lee (the man that couldn’t be hung). You know these artist geniuses, they move around a bit and in most cases, these former residents of Exeter were not life long.
This being a busy university city, Exeter offers plenty to see and do. One of the more popular spots is the stunning historic quayside. This was where Sir Francis Drake spent a lot of time and continues to be abundant with atmosphere and historic haunts like the seventeenth century warehouse buildings.
Why not start your sightseeing splurge here and move on to the Guildhall, the Ship Inn, the Old Mint and the twelfth century Cathedral. When it comes to top attractions, in Exeter, you will find you are spoilt for choice!
When the urge to explore further a-field falls upon you, jump into that handy hire car and take off for sandy Exmouth, just nine miles away.
